“Control” is the 1st chapter of the forthcoming new album

Conscience return—reborn, redefined, now as a duo. With Control, they unveil the first chapter of the upcoming album Suspended in Time. A track that demands to be experienced, not just heard: melodic, powerful, familiar yet surprising. The instant you press play, you’re caught between tension and release—where music becomes more than sound. The only question: will you keep control—or let it slip?

Biography

CONSCIENCE was founded in August 1991 as a solo project by Rüdiger Illg. He gained his first musical experience in the 1980s with the C64, the short-lived project “Agony” (together with a school friend), and on his father's slightly damaged home organ. RI became interested in music at an early age, recording radio programs, making his own compilations, and persuading his parents to buy a record player.

It wasn't until he was 20 that RI had enough money to buy a synthesizer (Yamaha SY22). CONSCIENCE was born.

Shortly thereafter, an Atari ST, sequencer software, and a small mixing console were added. The first purely instrumental tapes were created. With the purchase of a microphone and an effects unit, vocals were added, which for the first time outweighed the instrumental pieces on the tape “Calls of despair.”

The musical driving force during this period was both the discovery of new musical genres and the mainstream's shift towards house, hip hop, and Eurodance, which RI couldn't relate to very much.

In 1992, the sound of CONSCIENCE took a big leap towards greater professionalism with the Korg 01/W synthesizer. The equipment continued to grow over the years and a series of tapes was produced. Some tracks made it onto tape samplers, others onto CD samplers. It was not until 1998 that the first official EP CD (Hardware) was released on the Kafue-Systeme label.

The era of tapes had come to an end and given way to CD-Rs. From 2001 onwards, the CD-Rs were released on the New-experience label. CONSCIENCE has been signed to Echozone since 2009 and made its debut there with the CD “Gravity has gone.”

Since CD productions were no longer profitable, all releases from 2012 onwards were available exclusively as downloads. In the 2000s, several guest singers also appeared on the albums, such as Dan Söderqvist (Twice a Man) and Colin Angus (The Shamen).

In addition to new singles and albums, newly recorded old tracks were also released, e.g. on the EPs and albums of the Backwards series.

CONSCIENCE has only performed live occasionally so far. However, there are plans to increase these activities (requests are welcome).

In addition to CONSCIENCE, RI founded the projects CHAOS NETWORK (now on hold) and SCIENCE O.C.N. in 1997.

RI was and continues to be active as a producer, remixer, and mastering engineer.

Every two weeks, he hosts the radio show “Krimskrams butikken.”

Insa joined Conscience already on the single "No fear" in 2022 and two Depeche Mode cover versions. Since 2025 she is a permanent member of the project.

This album was released 25 years ago and was different in many ways. It was the first recorded on harddisc using a PC, the first using an audio workstation, the first using virtual instruments, the first using the Yamaha FS1R-synthesizer and the first using a proper microphone for the vocals.
All these aspects led to a different sound compared to its predecessor „Phases“. The album wasn’t released on any label back then but available as a CD-R.
Equipment: Korg 01/W, Yamaha TG500 (including FM-extension), Yamaha FS1R, Akai S2000, Waldorf Microwave, some Softsynths and a PC with the Cubase VST as sequencer, AKG C3000 microphone, Mackie CR1604 mixer, Alesis Quadraverb 2, Yamaha Telecaster
Some of the instrumental versions are released for the first time. Due to reasons I don’t remember some drum- and percussiontracks are not included. I decided to update three of the tracks on a seperate release (Girl in a car (Update)).
This re-release is only available via bandcamp.

A little bit of history...
In the early years of Conscience there were always some instrumental tracks. In fact the project began as an instrumental project because I had no equipment to record vocals. Until 1997 instrumentals were a fixed element of Conscience. That changed with the foundation of the side-projects Science O.C.N. and Chaos network. Now that Chaos network is no more and Science O.C.N. has its very own style this leaves some tracks without a home. You can find some of these on this compilation as well as some instrumental versions of well known or not so well known Conscience tracks.
All tracks written and produced by RI. All instruments by RI.
Recorded, mixed and mastered by RI at Science2 except 1 co-written by Dennis Schimonik.

This is rarities part II.
A little bit of history...
As I went through my backups and archives during lockdowns in 2020 I found a lot of demos and versions I had forgotten about. I also found some songs or fragments, which I never really finished. So I collected all of them and sorted them. In the end I had to leave about 20 tracks behind, because they were not different enough compared to the final version or simply not worth listening to. Some tracks were only available as mp3-file, some were not. Some were already mixed or had properly recorded vocals, some others were just „in a bad condition“. I tried to make the best out of it. In the end I identified five different groups of tracks which will be explained below:

Finished leftovers (tracks 1-5)
Different production (tracks 6-11)
Demos for guest vocals (tracks 12-19)
Early versions (tracks 20-25)
Drumless (tracks 26-28)

All tracks written and produced by RI. All instruments by RI. Recorded, mixed and mastered by RI at Science2 except „Just let it happen“ mastered by Marc Felish at Dominion mastering.
Released on Echozone.
Cover by Sebastian Sollfrank.

Just let it happen (Single) | 2020

  • Just let it happen 04:01
  • Hopeless 02:50
  • Just let it happen (Extended version) 06:06
  • Being there (Demo) 05:06

This single is the first of three parts of the „Rarities-series“.
The history of the song „Just let it happen“ dates back to the very beginning of Conscience. It was 1991 when the first lines of the chorus appeared on paper. For unknown reasons there was no music for these lyrics but always a melody to them in my head. Later in 2003 I tried to make a song out of that idea. In 2008 I finally recorded a demo version, which was never finished or released. You can find this version on the compilation „Alternative Conscience“. In 2016 there was a version with different lyrics but the same melody for a project called „The phantom skies“.
The track „Hopeless“ was a demo from 2017. It was recorded during the sessions for the album „Inappropriate“ but the song was never finished. I finished it for this release without adding further lyrics.
„Being there (Demo)“ is a demo version of the same track from the album „Gravity has gone“. It dates back to 2008. The final version also features a Theremin in the end-section.
Written and produced by RI. All instruments by RI. Recorded, mixed and mastered by RI at Science2 except 1. and 3. mastered by Marc Felish at Dominion mastering.
You can find a karaoke-version of "Just let it happen" on the Science2-YouTube channel.
Released on Echozone.

This album was the first one that was recorded on harddisk using Cubase. The Yamaha FS1R was also a new synth that was used a lot. For the first time I could edit and double my vocals. Every other vocal- and guitar recording up to this date was a live-recording. No edits were possible. When I messed up I had to to a complete new take.
Tracks 11-13 are exclusive bonus-tracks.
Equipment: Korg 01/W, Yamaha TG500 (including FM-extension), Yamaha FS1R, Akai S2000, Waldorf Microwave, some Softsynths and a PC with the Cubase VST as sequencer, AKG C3000 microphone, Mackie CR1604 mixer, Alesis Quadraverb 2, Yamaha Telecaster
This album was remastered and expanded in 2025 for its 25th anniversary.
All tracks written and produced by RI. All instruments by RI. Recorded, mixed and mastered by RI at Science2 in 2000.

  • Lies like your life 01:55
  • Master of moments 03:13
  • Open your door 04:28

This was the twelfth album of CONSCIENCE. It was released as a tape in 1997 and some CD-Rs were made.
Equipment: Korg 01/W, Ensoniq EPS 16+, Yamaha TG500 (including FM-extension), Waldorf Microwave, Kawai XD-5 and an Atari 1040ST Computer with the Creator-Software as sequencer, a microphone, Mackie CR1604 mixer, Alesis Quadraverb, no guitar (except some demos on the bonus-collection).
Four tracks from this release were later released as "Hardware EP".
The whole album was revisited in 2021 and released as "Hardware_revisited". This was possible because I recorded the instrumentals of all tracks on DAT.
All tracks written and produced by RI. Additinal production and mixing by cs. Guitar on 7. and remix on 11. also by cs.
During the recording I hade to move home and my equipment was not all at the same space which led to the fact that the 01/W was barely used. "The reason" was some kind of a leftover track from the sessions to "Scope".
"Lies like your life" was just an unfinished idea on this album but was later finalized and recorded for the album "Virtual minds (Backwards4)" and was released as a single on the EP "Visions".

This was the elevnth album of CONSCIENCE. It was released as a tape.
Equipment: Korg 01/W, Ensoniq EPS 16+, Yamaha TG500, Kawai XD-5, Waldorf Microwave and an Atari 1040ST Computer with the Creator-Software as sequencer, a microphone, Mackie CR1604 mixer, Alesis Quadraverb.
On this album I concentrated a lot on the drums and lend a Kawai XD-5. I also bought the Waldorf Microwave and created a vocals-effect on my Quadraverb to sound darker.
"I could fly" was reworked and released as a single in 2024.
"Nothing more" was reworked for the Phases albums.
"Veils over water" became the blueprint for "Unveiled" by my sideproject SCIENCE O.C.N.
Unfortunately the Atari-disk with the data is defective, so re-creations were limited.

  • My building (1st mix) 05:06
  • 24 hours 05:11
  • Access denied (1st mix) 05:51

This was the tenth album of CONSCIENCE. It was released as a tape.
Equipment: Korg 01/W, Ensoniq EPS 16+, Yamaha TG500 and an Atari 1040ST Computer with the Creator-Software as sequencer, a microphone, Mackie CR1604 mixer, Alesis Quadraverb, Samick E-guitar.
The equipment didn't really change compared to "Mind-mirror" so the overall sound didn't change either. The Yamaha TG500 got an FM-extension at the end of the album production which was used on "Sundown". It is like the second half of the same album. All drums came from the EPS-sampler.
"Access denied" became some kind of a "hit" on this album. The bonus-track "24 hours" is an early version of "This life" with different lyrics.
"Access denied" was re-recorded for the Phases albums and later also reworked and released as a single in 2024.
3., 4. and 5. were re-recorded for the album "Virtual minds (Backwards4)" in 2024.
"This life" was reworked and released as a single in 2024. Remastered with bonus tracks.

This was the ninth album of CONSCIENCE.
This album features the new Yamaha TG500 for the first time. So it was used a lot. I also used some voice-samples (from DS9) which was very common for EBM at that time but not for synthpop. Most of the EBM-elements were gone on this album.
"A look inside" was first remixed for the album "Virtuality" and later on reworked and released as a single in 2023.
Tracks 2., 3. were re-recorded for the album "Virtual minds (Backwards4)" in 2024.
Track 5 was re-recorded for the EP "Visions" in 2024.
Track 7 was re-recorded for the Phases albums.

This was the eighth album of CONSCIENCE. It was released as a tape.
Equipment: Korg 01/W, Ensoniq EPS 16+ and an Atari 1040ST Computer with the Creator-Software as sequencer, a microphone, Mackie CR1604 mixer, Alesis Quadraverb, Samick E-guitar.
This album had a better sound because of the new mixing desk. I decided to do some remixes of older stuff.
"Wheels" also appeared on the tape sampler ELECTROPE Vol. 1 (Never judge a tape by its cover) from 1993.
The bonus-track "Disease" was made for a soundtrack but that project was never finished.
Track 3 was re-recorded for the Phases albums.
8. was re-recorded for the Backwards EP in 2016.
Remastered with bonus tracks.
All tracks written and produced by RI.

This was the seventh album of CONSCIENCE. It was released as a tape.
Equipment: Korg 01/W, Ensoniq EPS 16+ and Yamaha SY22-synthesizer and an Atari 1040ST Computer with the Creator-Software as sequencer, a microphone, a small Yamaha mixing-desk, Alesis Quadraverb, Samick E-guitar.
This album features the Ensoniq EPS 16+-Sampler which you can hear on every track.
The sound of the album is a bit harsher as on its predecessor and there are less synthpop-tracks. The direction of CONSCIENCE was still a bit unclear and pointed in the direction of EBM and Darkwave on this and the following release.
The track "The day will come" also appeared on the CD-Sampler An ideal for living 2 (GAR Records), which was the very first CD-appearance by Conscience.
2. and 4. were re-recorded for the Backwards² EP in 2019.
6. was re-recorded as a b-side of the single "The rate of absurdity" in 2023.
9. was re-recorded for the album "Tales cleaned up (Backwards³)" in 2023.

This was the sixth album of CONSCIENCE. It was released as a tape.
Equipment: Korg 01/W and Yamaha SY22-synthesizer and an Atari 1040ST Computer with the Creator-Software as sequencer, a microphone, a small Yamaha mixing-desk, Alesis Quadraverb, Samick E-guitar.
The use of the 01/W was a big step forward regarding sound and production.
You can hear the three different directions and/or influences on this album: EM/ambient, Synthpop and EBM.
Remastered with bonus tracks. Tracks 21-24 were previously unavailable.
All tracks written and produced by RI.
Guitar on 8 by CS.

The short instrumentals "Tale I-IV" were meant as intros and outros to the two sides of the tape.

This was the fourth album of CONSCIENCE. It was released as a tape.
Equipment: Yamaha SY22-synthesizer and an Atari 1040ST Computer with the Creator-Software as sequencer, a microphone, a small Yamaha mixing-desk, Alesis Quadraverb.
The first time that there were more vocals tracks than instrumental ones. It was also the first tape that was recognized by a wider audience in the tape scene.
I remember someone saying while "The colours die" ran in the background: " Oh the Sisters of mercy, I like them.
The tracks 2, 8 and 12 were later re-recorded. 2 and 8 were released on backwards as reworked versions, track 12 was first re-recorded and released on "Cleaned up" and later reworked for "Tales cleaned up (Backwards³).
"The final sign (fade out)" was created by switching of the Atari while the track was still playing. That created some kind of loop.

This was the second tape by CONSCIENCE, also just recorded on tape with an Yamafa SY22 as the only instrument.
What is new here are the long tracks and the first attempt of something like a remix/extended version (Progression, originally from "The screen").
I made the cover myself (obviously) and in the end this could be the rarest tape of Conscience with only 3 or 4 copies that I know of.
My passion for longer instrumental tracks was later an essential part of my project SCIENCE O.C.N.
I tried to remaster the old tape-recordings and added one bonus tracks (10) which did not appear on the original tape.

  • It´s All Time Gone 5:31

This was the very first album of CONSCIENCE. It was released as a tape.
The only equipment was a Yamaha SY22-synthesizer and an Atari 1040ST Computer with the Creator-Software as sequencer, except on track 11 which was played live.
So there are no vocals, no guitars, no mixing. I tried to remaster the old tape-recordings and added two bonus tracks (9, 10) which did not appear on the original tape. 10. was the very first recording of Conscience.
Credits: All tracks by RI except 02 and 07 by RI and GI. Track 1 was also released as an extended version on the second tape.
Cover by someone who I forgot.
It was designed to be in black and white because copies in colour were expensive. I sent some tapes out to labels but got only a few reactions. And of course that was before the internet, so everything happened via snail mail. Maybe it was way to soon to put a tape out but ideas were flowing and so I recorded a lot at that time.
